The Expanded Field

This conference paper was delivered as a keynote at the Arquitectura v2020 Congress , at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura. Universitat Politècnica de València, 2013.

The ‘school of architecture’ is a relatively recent development; when compared to the length of time that architecture has been ‘practiced’. The education of the architect has a longer history in relation to the arts, than as a separate field. We may wonder whether the health of the profession, in some countries, may be related to way that architectural education has moved away from a broad understanding of context and relation, toward a specialisation. Have we painted ourselves into a corner?

In this paper, I explore the pedagogies and practices of teaching architecture with close links to art and design; as developed and taught at Central Saint Martins.
